Gestures

September 28 – November 9, 2024

Rusha & Co. is pleased to present Sierra Love in her debut solo exhibition. Drawing inspiration from Josef Albers’ observation that color is always in flux, continuously shifting in relation to its surroundings, Love explores the fluidity of color as well as the broader dynamics of process and form. Rather than working toward a predetermined image or structure, she begins each piece with an open-ended “What if…” which allows the work to develop organically.

Central to Love’s process is a sense of tension and risk.  The risk is essential, as it serves to juxtapose the slow, deliberate techniques of crocheting and tufting. These time-intensive methods enable Love to form a deep connection with each piece, continually pushing the boundaries of color, composition, and form.

The exhibition, titled Gestures, challenges traditional notions of gesture, which are often associated with sweeping, expressive movements. Love examines whether slow, intentional stitches, built over time, can convey the same emotional weight and movement as a rapid, singular gesture.

Through this patient and deliberate process, Love redefines conventional ideas of gesture, investigating how structure and form can come together to evoke a sense of energy and expression.
